Moroccan craftsmanship is exotic, intricate and colourful. Almost twenty percent of the population works in arts and crafts including weaving, woodwork, ironwork, leather, pottery, embroidery, and jewellery.
The crafts produced outside the cities tend toward ‘tribal’ traditions, while that of the cities of Fez and Marrakesh lean more toward the aesthetic and religious traditions.
But while Islamic cultures use mainly blues, greens and whites, Moroccans have absorbed the vibrant Berber palette of reds, yellows, pinks, purple and oranges from the desert, which they use boldly in their patios, floor tiles, roof tiles as well as painting their interior and exterior walls.
