COSTA DE LA LUZ, SPAIN
South of Cadiz, Spain's Atlantic coast is edged with vast golden beaches where the surf rolls in and stiff breezes provide some of the most exciting windsurfing in Europe.
Start at the southern end, Tarifa - now popular with Ibiza fashionistas - and watch the windsurfing action on Los Lances beach. Then head north.
There isn't a dud beach along the whole stretch from here to Conil de la Frontera, though two of the best places to stop are Zahara de los Atunes, a long stretch backed by dunes, and El Palmar, a popular family beach with gentler surf and plenty of beach bars.
If it's too windy for the beach (mini sandstorms can be a problem), Seville and Cadiz are within easy driving distance. Or gaze at the horizon from the heights of Cape Trafalgar - and imagine it heavy with the gunfire and smoke of Nelson's great victory 200 years ago.
